A Programmer should ideally control heating and hot water independently of each other. This is known as a 16 programmable programmer. For a fully pumped system a room and cylinder thermostat should also be provided in conjunction with zone valves to control comfortable room and hot water temperature levels as well as on/off timing.
A Room thermostat controls the room air temperature it is in to your liking. By setting this to your desired level of comfort the boiler thermostat can be set higher especially in extreme cold weather to gain a more rapid heat up without compromising the set heat level.
A Cylinder thermostat controls the temperature in the hot water cylinder to a comfortable level of your choice. The boiler thermostat can be set higher especially in extreme cold weather to gain a more rapid heat up of your radiators without compromising the set temperature level of your hot water.
A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) controls the air temperature in individual rooms where it is to a comfortable level of your choice. The boiler thermostat can be set higher especially in extreme cold weather to gain a more rapid heat of radiators without compromising the set room temperature level.
NO MESS UPGRADING: when replacing a gas boiler all of the above controls are required by building regulations part L. This could pose problems with hard wiring with cable runs and redecorating in existing properties. The solution is remote controlled (RC) room and cylinder thermostats, so if you wish to upgrade your existing system, the answer will be mess free.
